Point-of-Care Diagnostics: Quick and Easy Realization of Portable Medical Devices

More and more medical devices are being developed for mobile use. Whether in an emergency ambulance, in the emergency room or simply for use in different treatment rooms, mobility is required.

An important capability is the operation by rechargeable battery, if possible for a whole work shift. Of course, reduced CPU power consumption must not be at the expense of graphics performance or limited connectivity. Size also plays an important role, mobile devices should be small and handy. The i.MX 7ULP processor family represents NXP's current development in ultra-low power processing and is characterized by the advanced implementation of the Arm Cortex-A7 core, the Arm Cortex-M4 core and a 3D and 2D graphics processing unit (GPU). Based on the i.MX7ULP application processor from NXP, F&S Elektronik Systeme has developed the low power CPU module PicoCoreMX7ULP.

Various power down modes are available; and when exiting the modes, the full computing power is available again in a very short time. Run (Display on, Idle): typ. 68.9mA (289 mW), Deep Suspend: typ. 3.3mA (13 mW). Although the NXP i.MX 7ULP CPU is very power efficient, it has a powerful graphics unit consisting of an OpenGL ES 2.0 unit, an OpenVG 1.1 3D unit and a 2D Graphics accelerator. Networking is also important for portable devices. An on board WLAN/BT5.0 LE module (pre-certified) with antenna socket is provided for this purpose. Another highlight of the PicoCoreMX7ULP is the integrated charging circuit for a 4.2V lithium-ion battery. If the PicoCoreMX7ULP is supplied with 5V (e.g. via USB), the connected battery is charged automatically. If the PicoCoreMX7ULP is disconnected from the 5V power supply, a change to the battery supply takes place automatically. The connection of the battery can easily be integrated into the own development.
